How much does teeth whitening cost at the dentist in Kiel? - Prices & Methods at a Glance
Professional bleaching at the dentist is one of the most common aesthetic treatments in dentistry – but what does it really cost? Prices vary considerably depending on the method, effort, and initial situation. This guide gives you an honest overview of the common methods, their costs, and what to consider when choosing. All information is a guideline; the exact costs will be determined after an individual examination in our practice.

Does the health insurance cover the costs of bleaching?
No. Professional bleaching is considered a cosmetic treatment and is neither covered by statutory nor private health insurance plans as standard. You will bear the full cost yourself. Some private supplementary insurance policies cover a portion of the costs for cosmetic dental treatments – check your insurance contract or inquire directly with your provider. An exception might be internal bleaching after a medically necessary root canal treatment – in this case, it's worth an individual inquiry with your provider.

In-Office Bleaching: Immediate Results in the Practice
What happens during in-office whitening?
In office bleaching involves applying the bleaching agent directly in the dentist's office. The gums and oral mucosa are carefully covered and protected beforehand. The bleaching agent typically works for 30-60 minutes, often supported by a light source. In a single session, teeth can be brightened by several shades - results are immediately visible. In-office bleaching is the fastest and most effective method and is particularly suitable for patients with a specific date in mind (wedding, event, vacation).
Who is in-office bleaching suitable for?
In-office bleaching is suitable for patients with healthy teeth and gums, without active cavities or periodontitis. A preliminary examination always takes place with us before the treatment. Patients with sensitive teeth can receive a preparatory fluoridation upon request, which reduces sensitivity.
Home Whitening: Flexible and Refreshable
How does home bleaching work?
For home bleaching, we create custom trays that are precisely molded to your teeth. These trays are filled with a bleaching gel provided by the dentist and worn for several nights or for a few hours during the day. The whitening process is slower than with in-office procedures, but it is more even and carries a lower risk of sensitivity. Another advantage: the trays remain a perfect fit and can be refreshed with new gel at any time—without another appointment for impressions.
How long does home bleaching take?
As a rule, the aligners are worn daily for 1-2 hours for 2-3 weeks or overnight. The exact protocol depends on the gel used and the desired outcome. We will guide you through the treatment and adjust the procedure as needed.

Internal Bleaching: The Specialty for Discolored Teeth After Root Canal Treatment
Internal bleaching is a special method that hardly anyone knows about, and which is only offered by specialized dental practices. It is used when a tooth has become discolored from the inside out after root canal treatment or dental trauma. In these cases, external bleaching does not help, as the discoloration is located beneath the enamel.
The dentist opens the tooth from an inconspicuous area, applies the bleaching agent directly into the tooth cavity, and then seals the tooth again. The treatment is repeated 2-3 times depending on the results. The procedure is gentle, preserves the natural tooth structure, and delivers lasting results – without a crown or veneer.
Since Dr. Christofzik specializes in endodontics and is a member of the DGET (German Society of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology), we offer internal bleaching to the highest professional standard.

Drugstore vs. Dentist: What is really better?
Over-the-counter teeth whitening products - whitening strips, bleaching gels, whitening toothpastes - are enticingly inexpensive. However, the difference compared to professional treatment by a dentist is considerable:
| Drugstore products | Dentist | |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient concentration | Very low (max. 0.1% H₂O₂) | Significantly higher (6–35% H₂O₂) |
| Result | 1–2 shades lighter | Up to 8 shades lighter |
| Risk | Uneven, irritation possible | Controlled, safe |
| Durability | Weeks | 2–4 years |
| Check suitability | No | Yes – treat cavities and periodontitis beforehand |
In the EU, drugstore products are limited to a maximum of 0.1%%hydrogen peroxide. According to EU directives, dental products may contain up to 6%%, and specialist products up to 35%%.

What influences the price of bleaching?
The exact costs depend on several factors:
- Starting situation: Severely discolored teeth may require more sessions or higher gel concentrations.
- Selected Method: In-office is more complex than home bleaching.
- Number of teeth Internal bleaching is billed per tooth
Pre-treatment: If a professional dental cleaning is necessary before bleaching, additional costs will apply (approx. €80-150). - Combination treatments In-Office Plus Home Bleaching for Maximum and Lasting Results

The most common questions about bleaching and the cost
Is teeth whitening at the dentist worth it compared to drugstore products?
Yes, professional bleaching is worth it for long-lasting and clearly visible results. Drugstore products only provide minimal results due to the legally limited concentration of active ingredients. Professional bleaching at the dentist can whiten teeth by up to 8 shades and lasts 2-4 years with good care.
I switched from smoking to e-cigarettes - was it worth it for my teeth?
Regarding cancer risk and carcinoma-associated mucosal damage, possibly yes. Regarding periodontitis, cavities, and dry mouth, the benefit is significantly less than often assumed. The best step for your oral health remains complete cessation.
Can I refresh the bleaching result myself?
Yes - if you opt for home bleaching with us, you can keep the custom-made trays and reorder new bleaching gel at any time. A touch-up is that easy and significantly cheaper than a new treatment. We'd be happy to discuss with you how often a touch-up makes sense.
When should I not do bleaching?
Bleaching is not recommended for: active cavities or periodontal disease (treat first), during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for very sensitive teeth without prior treatment, and for severely damaged tooth enamel. Crowns, bridges, and fillings cannot be whitened – we will check beforehand to ensure the result will be satisfactory for you.
How long does an in-office bleaching session last?
An in-office bleaching session typically lasts 60-90 minutes, including preparation, gum protection, application time of the agent, and final fluoridation. For the home bleaching option, you'll initially have two short appointments for impressions and to pick up the trays, then you'll wear the trays yourself at home.
