Professional tooth whitening at the dentist: bleaching
What happens before bleaching?
Your dentist will discuss the various options with you and work with you to find the optimum treatment strategy.
Professional teeth cleaning is carried out before bleaching. As biofilm and tartar influence the effect of the bleaching system, these are removed in advance.
What bleaching methods are available?
The choice of bleaching method depends on the individual needs and condition of the teeth, and it should always be done under the guidance of a qualified dentist to ensure that it is done safely and effectively.
A distinction is made between internal and external bleaching. External bleaching is the most commonly used method of teeth whitening. It involves whitening the outer surface of the teeth.
Can I whiten my teeth myself at home?
The use of home remedies for teeth whitening is often advertised as a natural and gentle method for whiter teeth. However, it is important to note that not all of these home remedies are equally effective or safe.
In fact, even the best home remedies can damage individual teeth in the long term and, in the worst case, even increase discoloration. You should therefore be extremely cautious even when using such tips for temporary whitening.
Types of bleaching
In this process, certain caries defects are treated without drilling and the tooth structure can be preserved. Gentle treatment, long-term tooth preservation and natural esthetic results are our goal.
We believe it is important to take time and plan individualized treatment with our patients to listen, to truly understand each individual’s needs, goals and oral health. Thanks to our experienced dentists, we can offer you solutions that will improve their health and give you a bright smile.
01
External bleaching
This method is used to whiten several teeth at the same time. It is the most common and can be carried out at the dentist or at home on the dentist’s instructions. In external bleaching, a bleaching system is applied to the outer surface of the teeth.
There are two main variants, in-office bleaching and take-home bleaching.
With in-office bleaching, the bleaching agent is applied in the dental practice, often in conjunction with special light sources or laser devices to accelerate the activity of the bleaching agent.
This enables faster results, usually within one session. Overall, this bleaching method offers an effective way to safely lighten the tooth color.
The dentist has customized bleaching trays made, which the patient fills with a bleaching agent at home and wears for a certain period of time.
This is a slower method compared to in-office whitening, but allows greater control over the degree of whitening and is comfortable for the patient.
04
Internal bleaching
This method is usually used when only a single tooth or a few teeth that have become darker are to be whitened, for example after root canal treatment.
With internal bleaching, the bleaching system is applied directly to the affected tooth. The dentist opens the tooth and applies the bleaching system internally. The process can be repeated several times until the desired brightness is achieved.

Frequently asked questions about bleaching
Which drinks & foods stain teeth yellow?
The discoloration of teeth can be promoted by the consumption of certain foods and drinks, as acids and other substances attack the enamel and cause deposits over time. Here are some foods that can contribute to yellowing teeth and should therefore be consumed in moderation if you want to maintain a bright smile:
- Soft drinks such as Coke, Fanta and Co.
- White and red wine
- Balsamic vinegar
- Acidic fruit juices: fruit juices with a high acid content such as lemon or orange juice
- Spices such as curry or saffron
- Nicotine: tobacco or smoking products that contain nicotine
- Coffee and black tea
Limiting consumption of these foods and regular dental care practices such as brushing, flossing and regular dental visits can help maintain tooth color and minimize discoloration.
What can I eat after bleaching?
In the first 24 hours after bleaching, it is advisable to follow a so-called “white diet”, which means that you should avoid coffee, tea, wine, cigarettes, cola and similar dye-rich foods. During this period, the teeth are particularly susceptible to new discoloration.
- Drinking natural or fruity water: Prefer water without acidity or excessive sugar. If you choose a soft drink, make sure that it does not contain any added coloring.
- Prioritize white foods: Choose foods that do not stain teeth, such as fish, omelets, pasta, dairy products, bread, mushrooms and the like. This is important as the enamel can be more sensitive to discoloration after treatment.
- Fruits and vegetables: If you want to enjoy fruits and vegetables, go for varieties that are naturally low in dyes, such as bananas, lettuce, cucumbers, eggplants and apples. This will help protect the results of your teeth whitening and keep your teeth shiny.
- Sweets: White chocolate, cream, pudding or condensed milk based sweets can be an option if you have a sweet tooth.
- Spices: The use of spices such as salt, baking soda, garlic and garlic salt is less harmful as they do not affect fresh teeth whitening.
Is there a risk to the enamel or gums from bleaching?
If the appropriate instructions for use are followed, neither the enamel nor the gums should be endangered by the tooth whitener. In dental practices, treatment is usually carried out with rubber sleeves or insulating agents to protect the gums.
Some patients may experience a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity after whitening therapy, but this can usually be treated by fluoridation.
Can whitening toothpastes lead to whiter teeth?
Whitening toothpastes, which are available in pharmacies, drugstores or online, contain phosphates and cleaning agents that dissolve and remove external discoloration by loosening and abrading plaque. This can result in cleaner teeth, but not necessarily brighter teeth. The natural color of our teeth is mainly determined by the dentin, also known as dentin, which is located under the transparent enamel and shines through it. This is why some people have naturally lighter teeth and others darker. To lighten the dentin, the use of bleaching agents is necessary.
Even toothpastes that contain whitening agents generally only have a limited effect and can at most reduce discoloration, which can make the natural tooth color appear more clearly again.
